Race 5 Wynyard, Findex 8.5km Handicap Report

The PCCCT headed to Wynyard on Sunday for the Findex 8.5km Handicap. Sunny and slightly breezy conditions greeted fifty-eight runners to the start line, ready to tackle the trails along the Inglis River.

Whilst not being technical trails, there were still plenty of tree roots, board walks and steps to keep runners on their toes. With the undulating course, the win was going to come from a runner who ran a consistent time without burning out early.

That runner was Tony Abel, who took out the finishing tape by thirty seconds. Having consistently placed in the top ten this year, this run was a reward for effort put in the last four races. Tony returned to the club this year after an eleven-year hiatus, after the sad and sudden loss of his wife last year.  He is a decorated member of the club, having recorded six victories throughout the 70’s and 80’s, including a marathon victory in 1982. Tony was also the secretary for the club in 1986 and 1987.

Second place was David Wright, followed closely by young charger Dominic Troughton.

Ellen Burgess recorded the fastest time for the females, with new member Sam Mawer recording the fastest of the males.

A strong field of fifteen took part in the earlier nominated time race, which was won by Eva Murrell, Lachie Riley, Chad Burr, and Lucy van Rooyen.

Entries are now open for next Sunday’s race at Fernglade, as well as the Mountain Classic on Sunday May 2. Visit our website for more information on the races and entry deadlines.

Race 5 Wynyard, Findex 8.5km Handicap Race Brief and Handicaps

This course starts at Gutteridge Gardens, Wynyard.  The race starts near the soundshell and heads north-west on the path until this ends at Jenner St.  The race then briefly follows Jenner St before following the track along the river.  At ~1.5 km into the run the track end and runners will cross the road entry into the Cape Bridge Picnic Ground and follow Table Cape Rd on the right hand side footpath, over the bridge.  Immediately after the bridge, runners will cross the road and join the northern side of the river track.  The river track continues for~2.5 km until it reaches the Bass Highway.  The course then takes the footbridge across the Inglis river and then drops down onto the southern side of the river track for the ~2.5 km return to Table Cape Rd.  Runners then cross Table Cape Rd and return to the Start/Finish along the same route as initially taken.

Notes:

  1. There are two crossings Table Cape Rd and there are short sections where the course follows Jenner St and the Esplanade.  Runners are strongly reminded that they do not have right of way and that they are expected to take due care at all crossings.
  2. There are sections of exposed tree roots, stairs and variable lighting.  It is suggested that runners avoid using sunglasses out on course.

Race 5 Wynyard, Findex 8.5km Handicap Preview

Will van Rooyen, in his first victory last year

The 2021 PCCCT season heads west this Sunday for the Findex Wynyard 8.5km Handicap, returning to a favourite of the new courses introduced last season.

The out-and-back course starts at Gutteridge Gardens, utilising the trails and board walks following the Inglis River. The course will suit agile runners, with quick thinking and movement required to take the best line.

Two of the club’s youngest runners, fifteen-year-old Dominic Troughton, and sixteen-year-old Will van Rooyen, will be well suited to this type of running. Both runners impressed last week on the trails in Spreyton, both finishing in the top five. Dominic and Will have recently stepped up to the Handicap events, after being regular features in the nominated time events throughout the years.

Another young charger, Joshua Febey, would not surprise with a win after recording a convincing victory in this race last year. Febey has been placing well this season and seems to enjoy the longer distances.

Last week’s favourite Tony Abel was only thirty-four seconds behind the winner in that race and could easily break the tape.

Others in contention are Shaun Batten, Gerard Lowry, and Adrian Mann, all of whom ran well on the trails last week.

Runners are reminded that entries are online only and close at 6pm Friday. New members are always welcome and encouraged to check our website. www.pccct.org

The nominated time event will start at 9am.

Race 4 Spreyton, Spreyton Cider Co 5km Handicap Results and Report

A good field gathered to hear the starter’s orders for the Spreyton Cider Co 5km handicap at Spreyton at Sunday which was run in cool but sunny conditions. With the recent dry weather, it wasn’t even necessary for members to get their feet wet as they made their way through apple and cherry orchards.

The course had a couple of changes this year to incorporate more trail and it was very well received by runners.

Matthew Lardner was a narrow winner from one of the youngest Club members, Dominic Troughton with Markus Larch, having his first run with the PCCCT in third.

Lardner, from South Forest, is one of two members who travel from Circular Head to compete and was very happy to have made the long trip worthwhile. He took up running about three years ago just for general fitness and enjoyment and decided to take a further step and run with the Club last year.

Pre-race favourite, Tony Abel was a close fourth, further indicating that a win is close.

Others to record promising performances were Will van Rooyen, Adrian Mann and backmarker, Shaun Batten, who finished strongly into eighth.

Larch took fastest time honours for the men (19:21) with Lyn Saint-John the quickest of the women (21:17).

The nominated time winner was  Monty Robertson.

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 11:00am.

Welcome to any new runners and new nominated time members today.

The meeting place is at the Spreyton Cider Co cidery on Melrose Road. However, the start will be in the big paddock across Sheffield Road where we have started in recent years. Please be careful crossing Sheffield Road.

IMPORTANT: do NOT do your warm-up on Sheffield Road. Use the paddock or the area around the cidery.

The course will have a couple of changes this year to make it more interesting and give us more trail. Run straight up the paddock to Jowetts Lane and turn left. Follow the road (stay on the left) until a finger directs you left into an orchard where you will run straight ahead (DO NOT turn immediately right as in previous years).

Follow the fingers and posts tied with ribbon which will take you through the cherry orchard, turn left and head down Pilgrims Road where you will be directed behind the apple shed (the second change). Complete the marked loop and rejoin your path out which will take you back to the start/finish.

The presentations will be at the Spreyton Cider Co cidery. You are invited to stop for lunch from The Little Orchard Food Van.

Thank you to Terry Watson and Roselyn Hendriks for measuring and marking the course.

Race 4 Spreyton Cider 5km Handicap Preview

The PCCCT season resumes after a week off for Easter, heading to the apple orchards for the Spreyton Cider 5km Handicap.

The race will start in a paddock nearby to Spreyton Cider, before heading out into the orchards. This race, consisting of mostly trail running, will be sure to provide plenty of entertainment for runners and spectators. Mud and puddles await if it rains before Sunday.

The shorter distance usually favours the front-markers, and favourite amongst them looks to be Tony Abel. Recording good finishing positions in the three prior races this season, Tony looks to be improving every week.

Young Dominic Troughton impressed at Port Sorell, recording a top three finish. With the potential for improvement from Dominic week to week, a win is certainly within his grasp.

Matthew Lardner produced a strong result at Port Sorell, as well as Brendan Burr. Neither would surprise with a victory this week.

Sam Lovatt is also a chance, having a strong run at the Easter Marathon on Sunday. If he recovers well, he could be right amongst the action.

To be noted is the later start time of 11am, to allow for members to compete in the Great Train Race earlier Sunday morning.

Runners are reminded that entries are online only and close at 6pm Friday. New members are always welcome and encouraged to check our website. www.pccct.org

The shorter nominated time event will be held at 10:30am.

Race 3 Port Sorell, Glow Cosmetics 7km Handicap Report

Race three of the PCCCT season was held on Sunday morning, with beautiful sunny weather greeting fifty-three runners at Port Sorell for the Glow Cosmetics 7km Handicap.

Only being the second time this course has been used, it was unfamiliar for many members. This provided runners with an extra challenge of pacing themselves through the changing surfaces underfoot. Much of the course is on sandy single trail, which was well received by competitors.

After two second places in the previous two races, Greg Malley finally broke the tape for his first win of the season with a handy margin of 29 seconds back to the next runner. Malley re-joined the club last year after four years away and has been working hard over the summer to improve his pace. Running a consistent distance every week has proved crucial to his improvement.

Storming home into second place was Sam Lovatt, recording the third fastest time of the race.

Rounding out the top three was fifteen-year-old Dominic Troughton. Dominic has stepped up to the handicap races this year after running the nominated time events in years past and looks a strong chance of a win this year with his constant improvement.

Thomas Murton recorded the fastest time for the males, whilst Brooke Fehlberg narrowly recorded the fastest for the females, only being one second faster than new member Felicity Lovatt.

The nominated time winners were Libby Crispin and Lachie Riley.

Members are reminded that there will be no race next weekend due to Easter.

Race 3 Port Sorell, Glow Cosmetics 7km Handicaps and Brief

This course consists of a mix of road and off road track starting at the park at the southern end of Port St, Port Sorell.  Runners will head west along the esplanade before crossing the Panatana Rivulet via the footbridge.  After crossing the rivulet, the course takes an anticlockwise loop following the trails, crossing Panatana Dr and continuing until the trail meets Milldan Rd.  Here runners will head north along Milldan Rd briefly before turning right into Jefkins Dr, following this road for approx. 800 m before a turnaround and returning to Milldan Rd.  The course then follows Milldan Rd north until the end of this road which leads directly onto trail.  Runners will follow this trail until the footbridge to complete the loop before re-crossing the bridge and returning the start area to the finish chute.

  1. There are two road crossings at Panatana Dr and Milldan Rd.  Runners are strongly reminded that they do not have right of way and that they are expected to take due care at all crossings.
  2. The off-road sections of the race are relatively easy, but there are sections of exposed tree roots and variable lighting.  It is suggested that runners avoid using sunglasses out on course.
  3. When warming up and moving towards the start area, people are reminded that runners may be starting their race.  Please take care to avoid interfering with runners already on course.
