Continue past the start/finish and follow the track up to the pool carpark. Take the path across the top of the carpark, continue until you enter the bush and take the first path on the left. Stay on this sawdust path until it meets up again with the cycle/walk path at Don College. Follow this around to the right and continue back up to the pool carpark and then back to the start.

Race 9 – “Remembering Ron Chequer” Wynyard 9km Race Briefing and Handicaps

If you are not feeling well, especially if you have cold/flu systems, on Sunday morning please don’t come to the run.

The meeting place is at Gutteridge Gardens, Wynyard.

There is limited parking in the Gardens carpark, so please leave this for other patrons and people with mobility problems or small children. There is parking at the wharf and in nearby streets.

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Welcome to new members Paul Homan and Lukas Pilkington, and new nominated time members.

Please be aware we are sharing paths with the public and need to give other users due consideration.

The course: The race starts near the soundshell and heads north-west on the path beside the river.

After ~1.5km you will come to Table Cape Road where it crosses the river. Cross the road to the left-hand side and then cross the bridge. Immediately over the bridge, turn left and follow the path for ~2.5km until you reach the Bass Highway.

Here, again cross over the river and run back to Table Cape Road along the southern side of the river. Recross the road and then retrace your steps back to the finish.

Please be careful crossing the road on each of the two occasions that we do.

Care needed: the path along the sides of the river is windy and narrow in parts. There are also rock/root trip hazards and some stairs. Please be careful. You want to get back safely to your awaiting sausage or veggie burger.

Please stay after the run to remember Ron and celebrate a successful season.

Race 9 – “Remembering Ron Chequer” Wynyard 9km Handicap Preview

Course map: https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/3216126451

The shortened 2020 season comes to a close this Sunday when members have the chance to run on a new scenic course at Wynyard.

The nine-kilometre out-and-back route starts at Gutteridge Gardens and will use tracks on both sides of the Inglis River, so no road running will be needed.

The race will be two kilometres longer than the last few runs and this will suit some runners who will prefer the extra distance.

One runner who has been slowly improving and fits the bill is Devonport runner Paul Birch.

A Club veteran, having had more than six hundred starts, Birch ran his best race for the season last week, with a strong run into fourth. Everything points to him having a second-to-none chance of taking out a well-deserved victory on Sunday.

Ellen Burgess also had her best result of the season last week with an excellent second. She is another who is happier, the longer the race and could easily break the tape.

Josh Febey was close to a win for most of last year and has shown up recently as well, so is another strong chance

Others to watch include Adrian Mann, Sven Mason and Mollie Powell.

This race will be run to honour the memory of Club stalwart Ron Chequer, who died suddenly earlier this year. Members are asked to stay after the race to enjoy a Club supplied barbecue and remember Ron.

New runners are welcome and must register for membership and enter by 9pm Friday.

The race will start at 9:30am while nominated time events will be held at 9:00.

Race 8 – Coles Beach, Devonport 7km Handicaps and Race Briefing

If you are not feeling well, especially if you have cold/flu systems, on Sunday morning please don’t come to the run.

The meeting place is at Coles Beach, Devonport.

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Welcome to new runners and new nominated time members.

The course: The race start will be on the grassed area near the BBQ to the west of the Coles Beach carpark. Head west and follow the shoreline to the Don River where the path turns left and follows up the river. It takes you under the train bridge and up to the sealed cycle/walk path at the bottom of the Don College oval.

Turn right taking the path until you cross the Don River Railway crossing then immediately turn right off the sealed path onto the sawdust track. Do NOT continue on the sealed path.

NOTE: a fresh, deep layer of sawdust has recently been spread on the first part of the track. It is a bit uneven so care is needed (though any landing would be very soft).

Stay on the sawdust track; don’t take any tracks off to the right or left. It will bring you to a left turn when almost to the pool. Keep on the track until you again reach the cycle/walk path.

Turn right and head up to the Aquatic Centre car park. Run on the path above the carpark, across the road entrance to the carpark (care needed!) and continue down the hill to the first switchback which will be the turn.

Then repeat your steps back to the finish.

We should be right with the Don River Railway train. The first run doesn’t leave until 10:00pm. However, please don’t take any risks if you and it do happen to get to the crossing together. It is very short and will cross quickly.

Please keep COVIDSafe distance between you and other runners, especially if you are following someone else. Please read our COVIDSafe plan if you haven’t done so. Thank you very much to our wonderful season sponsors which are all listed on our website.

Race 8 – Coles Beach, Devonport 7km Handicap Preview

Course map: https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/3218820217

Race eight of the PCCCT season will see competitors take on a seven-kilometre out-and-back course from Coles Beach, Devonport.

The interesting track will provide a variety of surfaces – grass, gravel, asphalt and sawdust – which some members will relish. It will be reasonably flat, apart from a couple of small hills in the region of the Aquatic Centre

With only two chances left for a win this season, competition will be keen.

In her first year with the Club, Catherine Bell has impressed with her improvement over the season and she was running strongly into fourth last week at Burnie. With a little more improvement this week, she looks the one to beat.

Another first year runner, Narelle Jacobs, was second over a similar course last week making a big improvement from her previous race She won’t have to run much better to take this out

Hayden Bishop is a backmarker who has been showing excellent form and this slightly tougher course will suit him perfectly, while Jason Scott is another possibility from a backish mark.

Others with undeniable chances include Shaun Batten, Paul Pilkington, Brooke Fehlberg and Selina Crispin.

New runners are welcome and must register for membership and enter by 9pm Friday on the Club website.

The race will start at 9:30am while nominated time events will be held at 9:00.

Race 7 – West Beach, Burnie 7km Handicaps and Race Briefing

If you are not feeling well, especially if you have cold/flu systems, on Sunday morning please don’t come to the run.

The meeting place is at West Beach, Burnie.

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Welcome to new runners, Kyra Jackson, Steve Tammens, Jarrod Wade and Melanie Bond, and new nominated time members.

The course: The race start will be on the grassed area immediately to the west of Fish Frenzy. Head west on the boardwalk and coastal pathway, past the penguin centre and West Park for 1.2 km.

At this point the coastal pathway takes a 90 degree right turn and runs parallel to the highway. Follow the pathway for another 1.3 km until it ends at Cooee.

The race course then follows the footpath for 100m before exiting onto a grassed area. Following the witches hats, the course crosses the unused train line and then follows Cooee Point Rd.

Once reaching Cooee Point, circle around the NW end of Cooee Point in an anticlockwise direction before rejoining Cooee Point Rd and retracing the course back to the start/finish area.

Notes:

* when leaving (and rejoining) the footpath at Cooee onto the grassed area there is a small (~30cm) step up (and down).  This will be marked on the day, but runners are advised to take care at this point.

* when running behind West Park, runners must follow the marked off path and not cut through the car park which will be open to the general public.

Please keep COVIDSafe distance between you and other runners, especially if you are following someone else. Please read our COVIDSafe plan if you haven’t done so. Thank you very much to our wonderful season sponsors which are all listed on our website.

Race 7 – West Beach, Burnie 7km Handicap Preview

Course map: https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/3278086132

Race seven of the PCCCT is the second seven-kilometre event of the season. This week’s meeting place is West Beach at Burnie and members will race over an out-and back course to Cooee Point.

The terrain will be mostly flat encouraging some fast times which will also be helped by the increased fitness now being displayed by many runners.

It is not easy picking a winner as many different members have shown form at times.

However, John Badcock could be the one to pinch this. He has been thereabouts in most races and is known to be doing some great training. He would be a deserving winner.

First year runner, Graham Higgins, was a strong second last week after starting from the same mark as the winner who has now been rehandicapped. That makes Higgins an obvious strong chance.

Another first year runner, Catherine Bell, has been showing rapid improvement and finished a close sixth last week to record her best result to date. She will go close to winning with a similar effort.

Other runners in form who will be chances are Andreas Petersen, Ellen Burgess, Caroline Brett and Dallas van Rooyen.

New runners are welcome and must register for membership and enter by 9pm Friday.

The race will start at 9:30am while nominated time events will be held at 9:00.

Race 6 – Turners Beach 7km Handicaps and Race Briefing

If you are not feeling well, especially if you have cold/flu systems, on Sunday morning please don’t come to the run.

The meeting place is at the Berry Patch at Turners Beach which will be available for coffees/ice-creams and/or brunch after the race.

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Welcome to new runners: and new nominated time members.

The course: Starting at the Berry Patch, run towards the river, almost to the train bridge, where you cross the railway line (care needed!) and enter the bush, following the path back to the left around the marshy area.

Please note: there are some muddy puddles in this section so consider wearing old footwear if you want to plough through them rather than go around. Please take care.

When you arrive at Lukin Street, turn right and then right again, into the bush. DON’T run down the grassy lane.

Follow the witch’s hats and path out onto the end of the Esplanade. Run on the river/beach side of the Esplanade eventually turning left past where the old service station used to be. Continue to Lethborg Avenue and turn right. The turn is about 200 metres along. Return exactly the same way as you ran out, again staying on the beach/river side of the Esplanade (so we don’t have to worry about the streets).

It will be well marked with witch’s hats and fingers.

Be careful of cars in the vicinity of La Mar Café.

Rod and Judith Priestly will be providing the voucher for the winner while the Berry Patch is giving us some vouchers for the random draw prizes. These will be presented following the race.

Please keep COVIDSafe distance between you and other runners, especially if you are following someone else. Please read our COVIDSafe plan if you haven’t done so. Thank you very much to our wonderful season sponsors which are all listed on our website.

Race 6 – Turners Beach 7km Handicap Preview

Course map: https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/3237375865

The longest race of the season to date awaits runners this Sunday, when they head to the Berry Patch at Turners Beach for a seven-kilometre handicap.

All races so far in this delayed season have been five or six-kilometres and many runners will be looking forward to being able to race over a slightly longer distance.

The course is a flat, out-and-back one, mostly on sealed surfaces although there is a section on bush tracks to give some variety.

One runner who will be suited by the distance and terrain is Ulverstone athlete, Nick Young.

Young has been consistent, without standing out, so far this year with his best results being seventh and then fifth in the first two races. He won’t have to improve much on those performances to take the victory.

The hardest to beat is definitely Kendall Buckley who will be out to atone after second last week, while Shaun Batten is also knocking on the door.

Hayden Bishop is a backmarker who will be storming through the field and it would not surprise if he broke the tape.

Others to keep an eye on include Steve Powell and Terry Watson while first year runners Selina Crispin and Narelle Jacobs are showing improvement.

New runners are welcome and must register for membership and enter by 9pm Friday.

The race will start at 9:30am while nominated time events will be held at 9:00.

Race 5 – Burnie Romaine Park Reserve 6km Handicaps and Race Briefing

This course consists of four laps (1 large and 3 small) around the Romaine park area.  This should provide great viewing options for spectators allowing them to follow the race as it unfolds.

The race starts on the eastern side of the Romaine Creek dam opposite the carpark off Amanda Crescent.  For lap 1, runners then cross the dam wall and run around the dam in an anticlockwise direction following the main track for 600m.  At this point runners reach a T intersection and the lap turns right up the hill, following the main track for another 500m before reaching the turn around point and returning via the dirt track that branches off the main track.  The lap continues to follow the dirt track heading north down the park fence line for 1000 m, past the dam to another turn around point which re-joins the main track and heads back towards the start area.  Lap 2 begins once runners reach the dam wall.  Lap 2 continues along the same track as lap 1 until the T intersection.  At this point runners continue straight and follow the main track for 600m back to the start area.  Laps 3 and 4 are repeats of lap 2.  After completing lap 4 runners will cross the dam wall a final time and the finish chute is on the left of the track near the children’s playground and carpark.

Notes:

  1. Parking is limited in the Romaine carpark.  Therefore, all competitors that are able, are requested to park in Blackwood Parade or Kingsley Avenue.  This is to ensure access to the park area for other users and club members who are travelling with people who have mobility issues and/or small children.
  2. When warming up and moving towards the start area, people are reminded that runners may be starting their race.  As the main track narrows near the dam wall, please avoid interfering with runners already on course.  If possible, please approach the start area by walking in an anticlockwise direction around the dam.
  3. Given the rain forecast for this weekend, parts of the course are likely to be damp and muddy underfoot.  However, there will not be any heavy mud sections.  Please choose your footwear accordingly.
