Motors 6km Handicap, Penguin

The penultimate race of the PCCCT season to be run Sunday has had to be switched from Fernglade to the Penguin motocross track in Dial Road. The Motors 6 kilometre handicap will remain a trail run and the course will be different from that used at this venue earlier in the year.

This is the fourth and final run in the inaugural trail run series. Members have appreciated the chance to run on courses which are unsealed, and which have, on occasions, been very wet and muddy.

With only two races remaining this season, runners who have not won yet will be desperate to not let all the raining put in this year be in vain.

This should mean a close and exciting race, with perhaps a surprise winner.

Dwayne Barry, in his first year with the Club, has been showing a lot of promise finishing close to the winner in several races over all distances. He was fifth in last week’s half marathon, beaten just over a minute.

Tim Dowling was fifth in a similar race two weeks ago and should show up with a similar effort. Likewise, Rebecca O’Garey, who was just behind Dowling in eighth has been consistent and a win would be well deserved.

Other strong chances include Kim Steven, Rebecca Marien and Patrick McMullen.

AJL Heavy Equipment Half Marathon

Anna small

.The AJL Heavy Equipment Half Marathon was run in perfect conditions on Sunday. The out-and-back course from West Ulverstone to Turners Beach produced some great efforts from Club members with none better than that of Wynyard architect, Anna Murton.

Murton had been threatening to win a race for some time and was thrilled to finally break through for her first win in her fourth year of running with the club.

After taking the lead from her mother, Liz, at the 17 kilometre mark, Purton was never headed and won in a time a touch slower than she had set for herself.

Together with her father, David, she trains three or four times a week, usually by walking and running with a pack of five greyhounds that are family pets.

Excellent performances from Adrian Lakeland and Patrick McMullen saw them take out the second and third places respectively. John Saltmarsh also ran an excellent race to finish in eighth position.

Fastest time for the men was recorded by Ben Hoare (1:17:58) while Danielle Mitchell was the fastest woman (1:31:37).

Earlier, the nominated time races were won by John Purton, Tali Brown. Quinn Aitken and Lachlan Purton.

AJL Heavy Equipment Half Marathon

The AJL Heavy Equipment Half Marathon may provide a consolation win for someone who finished close-up in the Feature Race two weeks ago. The course is, like the Wynyard to Burnie one, all flat. This one is out and back, starting at River Park, Ulverstone before heading to the turn at the end of the Esplanade at Turners Beach.

The 21.1 kilometre distance of the half-marathon has become a very popular one and no doubt many runners will be seeking PBs.

Adrian Lakeland ran a wonderful Feature Race to be beaten only eight seconds. He should start favourite but will need to be at his best. Should he falter, Ben Hoare or Stuart Wilson could well break the tape

Andrew Winkel followed his good run in the Feature Race with a great showing last weekend at the National Cross Country Championships in Canberra. He will be a strong chance.

Among the front and middle markers, Sarah Hiller, Amie Bramich, Kim Reader and Patrick McMullen are sure to be to the fore. Hiller was first female to finish in the Feature Race so the distance is sure to suit.

Big Six

Isaac small

Wynyard runner, Isaac Troughton, won his second race for the year when he took out the West Park Grove Store/Big Six 6 kilometre handicap at Burnie on Sunday.

Despite a tougher handicap because of his win in another 6 kilometre race at Devonport just eight weeks ago, Troughton was able to break the tape first due to the improvement he has made.

He attributes this to the quality training he has been doing with a strong group of young members, under the guidance of Club champion Thomas Murton.

It is very unusual for runners to win again the same season after a re-handicap, but Troughton is in his first season and being young – he is just 21 – great improvement can be made.

The race is conducted over a circuit course from the Howe St Netball Centre and includes a run up the steep Brickport Road hill.

Front marker Louise Morse showed a return to form leading for much of the journey, only being caught by Troughton and then Matthew Greenhill in the last 100 metres.

Other excellent performances were recorded by John Castledine, Tim Dowling and, off a front mark, Rebecca Marien.

Fastest times for men and women were recorded by Bryan Tuit and Rebecca O’Garey respectively.

Earlier, nominated time winners were Jennifer Fuller, Trinity Luttrell and Conor and Dominic Purton.

Big Six

This week the PCCCT returns to Burnie for the West Park Grove Store/Big Six 6 kilometre handicap. Commencing at the Howe Street Netball Centre the circuit course runs through the Burnie Park, and along the Bass Highway before the tough climb up Brickport Road.

John Castledine ran a great Feature Race last week and could take this out as the shorter distance will suit him.

Father and son, Dwayne and Lachlan Barry are first year Club runners and have been impressing all year. They could very well fight out the finish. Dwayne’s best recent finish was his third two weeks ago at Gunns Plains and he followed this with a great fourth in last week’s Feature Race. Lachlan was second at Railton recently.

Following her excellent result last week when she was first woman to finish, Sarah Hiller will be very hard to beat although she will be better suited over a longer distance.

Mike Taylor has become a specialist on this course with a number of wins. Although he has not been prominent in recent races, he could well surprise.

Members are reminded that entries for the half-marathon need to be in this Sunday.

Entries close at 9:30 with the race starting at 10:00. There will be nominated time events at 9:05.

2016 Feature Race

Mark small

Perfect weather conditions for running greeted the 83 starters who lined up for the 2016 Gowans Motor Group Wynyard to Burnie Feature Race on Sunday. Go marker Liane Hanson set off on the 17.6km journey from outside the Wynyard Post Office at 9:30 with backmarker, Thomas Murton, starting his quest for victory almost an hour later.

The general belief in the PCCCT is that the race starts to get serious once the Cam River has been crossed at Somerset. At this stage 12km has been completed and the main contenders are becoming known. At this stage on Sunday, frontmarker Sarah Hiller was still going strongly in front with David Murton, John Castledine and Stuart Wilson chasing hard.

Ben Hoare, who had started from the third back mark of 54:40 was looking the best chance of the backmarkers. Of the middlemarkers, Dwayne Barry and Adrian Lakeland who started from the same handicap, were running strongly but just behind them race favourite Mark Saint-John was looming ominously.

As West Park was approached, Lakeland had taken the lead only to be caught shortly after by Saint-John. The two then had a titanic struggle over the final kilometre with Saint-John prevailing by just 4 seconds with the fast-finishing Ben Hoare running into third a further 18 seconds back.

Dwayne Barry and Andrew Winkel rounded out the top five with Sarah Hiller hanging on well for seventh to be first female to finish.

Fastest male was Thomas Murton (tenth, 60:34) while Danielle Mitchell (fifteenth, 74:42) was fastest woman.

Saint-John, a teacher at Burnie High School, was exhausted when he finished, having given it his all, but was thrilled to win, having finished second six years ago. His wife, Lyn had become the first (and still only) woman to win the race when she was first across the line the following year. They are now the first husband/wife combination to have both won the race.

A member of the PCCCT committee, Saint-John is a popular clubman and his win was very well received.

Feature Race 2016

The main race for the PCCCT each year is the Gowans Motor Group Wynyard to Burnie Feature Race. The event starts in front of the Wynyard Post Office and finishes 17.6 kilometres later with a lap of west Park Oval.

The fact that so many runners are now peaking, the flatness of the course and the unusual distance make it very difficult to pick a favourite.

The gun will fire for go-marker Liane Hanson at 9:30 with the back marker, Club champion Thomas Murton starting his quest for victory 57 minutes and 40 seconds later. There are 89 entries in total.

Of the front markers, the strongest chances appear to be Sarah Hiller, Alan Bakes, and Anna Murton with Anna probably the best chance.

The favourites among the middle-markers would be Gerard Leary, Wayne Wiseman, Peter Elphinstone and Adrian Lakeland. Elphinstone won comfortably at Gunns Plains last Sunday and won’t be rehandicapped for that win until after the Feature Race. He will be very hard to beat.

The winner may well come from the strong and in-form backmarkers. Any of Mark Saint-John, Matthew Atkins, Brad Taylor, Bryan Tuit or Thomas Murton could easily breast the tape.

In a race full of chances, one thing is certain: it will be an exciting event with the likely winner not known until the finish is in sight.
