Annual General Meeting - Monday, December 12 - 7pm at the Ulverstone Surf Club

The AGM is an important event in the PCCCT calendar - an opportunity for members to have meaningful input into the running (no pun intended) of our club. Apart from the election of office bearers and our handicapper, the AGM is also the best place to voice your concerns about where your club is heading, suggest improvements or points the incoming committee may chose to address or even put forward rules and amendments to the committee, our constitution or both.

Some notes from the 2011 AGM:

Nearly fifty members attended what was the club’s biggest roll-up for an AGM in some years at the Ulverstone Surf Clubrooms on December 12.

After initial formalities and reports all office bearers were elected unopposed.

Club stalwart Barry Ling was elected President for the seventh year running with the remainder of the office bearers elected as follows: Vice-Presidents: John Lucas and Tony Yaxley; Secretary (and Public Officer): Sharron Yaxley; Treasurer: Gerard Leary; Handicapper: Harvey Jones; Publicity Officer: Rick Ferguson.

The committee was completed by the election of Douglas Hamerlok, Evette Kiely and Dale Atkinson who joins Malcolm Nutting, Steve Powell and Shane Hanson.

A motion was forwarded by Gerard Leary to introduce additional membership categories to our registration form as well as raising the registration fee to $40 for normal club members. Motion was passed unanimously.

A motion was forwarded by Rick Ferguson to change our Constitution to implicitly state that only current club members aged 15 years or older may vote at general meetings and/or bear office to serve on the club’s committee:
Section 18.4: Only current club members aged 15 years or older may vote at general meetings of the Association.
Section 24.1(c): Candidates must be current club members, 15 years or older, at the time of the AGM.
Motion was passed unanimously.

Jason Scott recommended that the new Committee consider placing the Burnie Surf Club / Fish Frenzy 5km closer to the start of the season and making it a 5km Championship. He also suggested moving the finish of our Feature race to the Burnie foreshore away from West Park and to allow starting the race at the lower end of Goldie Street.

Rod Viney addressed the meeting regarding the Code of Conduct commenting that he thought the Committee did not promote the Code enough to club members and he did not think that the Committee handled some instances that may be considered violations of the code appropriately this season. Rod suggested that next year the Code be included into the registration process with an acceptance signature required from every member. Rod also requested a show of hands to demonstrate to the Committee the meeting’s approval of his suggestions. The majority of those gathered raised their hands.

Dale Atkinson raised the subject of a Club history book being published. Gerard Leary said he had spoken to past member Dick Crawford who was interested in the project and the possibility of completing it by our 50th anniversary in 2017. Rick Ferguson is scanning photographic material from Barry Ling to publish online.

Michael Archer and Michael Bates raised concerns regarding purchasing another bus in the near future and suggested the new Committee be open-minded to other options.

Douglas Hamerlok raised his concerns about the accuracy of our Feature race distance.

Michael Bates suggested the club should promote our marathon better, as one of only three marathons in the State and the second longest running marathon in the country. David Sweetman also suggested the Committee may look at raising the prize-money from $170 for first place may assist.

David Atkinson suggested the Committee consider conducting a smaller race simultaneously with the marathon. There were some concerns raised by members that this may take members away from volunteering for drink stations. Kim Reader suggested service clubs or SES may be able to assist.

Two motions for Life Memberships were moved by Barry Ling: Eric Hughes and Chris Costello. Motions were carried. These will be presented at the first meeting of the season.

Multiple winners in a single season

Ray Spinks provided this list of members who have won more than one race in a single season. There have been nine members to acheive this remarkable feat during the past decade but a few more in the early days of the club.

Incredibly, Greg Price won 6 races in the first three seasons of the club and then another four in the two seasons 1974-75. In 1979 alone, there were seven individual runners to win more than one race. Handicappers must have been very lenient concerning race pulls back then!
